  1. Hard work when no one is watching

I am borrowing the theme for bullet # 1 from a great blogger and educator, George Couros (@gcouros). I had the chance to meet George last year during a PD Day. he is a great speaker and has some practical ideas for teachers and administrators. He is a really down to Earth guy, but what I really enjoy about his presenting and writing is his ability to make you think.

George recently wrote a blog post about working hard when no one is watching. This is so very important to develop as individuals. More and more we are looking for someone to pat us on the back and tell us that we did a good job. It sure is nice to get some gratification from the work that we do, but that can not be our only motivation. The reason we put in a good effort and work hard should be from the internal motivation that we have; a desire to do better, learn more, and to strive towards our goals. When the only motivation for hard work comes from getting that “attaboy” or “attagirl” from peers, parents, or teachers, we can be easily defeated if it never comes.

I believe that we need to recognize and encourage our children / students when a quality job is performed, but we need to also instill in them the desire to do a good job for the sake of doing a good job and we need to develop the resilience to continue on even if they are initially unsuccessful.

Let’s have a great week and let’s work hard, even if no one is watching.

  1. Parent Teacher Interviews

This past Wednesday and Thursday were our Parent Teacher Interviews. It was a great couple of days for conversation between parents, teachers, and students. It was awesome to see so many families at the school and I wanted to thank everyone for visiting the Collaborative Village and for supporting the bookfair. We will be able to purchase over $2500 in books towards our school and classroom libraries.
As a school we were quite happy with the use of the School Interviews website in order to book interviews. If you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to send your comments to stmn@eics.ab.ca.

Finally, if for some reason you were unable to attend, but would like the opportunity to talk to a certain teacher, please contact the teacher directly in order to arrange a time that is mutually convenient to both the family and the teacher.
  1. Fall Break - November 11 - 18

I just wanted to wish everyone a fantastic Fall Break. I know that some families (including mine) are using this time to get away while others are staying close to home. Regardless of your plans, I hope that the break is a restful and relaxing one. Take some time to take a breath and enjoy all that we have to be thankful for.
