  1. Happy New Year

Happy New Year, 2017 is upon us and the new year is a perfect time to reflect upon the past 12 months and look for ways to improve ourselves. I recently heard an interview on the radio and it was a discussion regarding resolutions for the new year and goal setting. The expert on the show was talking about the fact that many people do not want to make goals or they are unable to. She further indicated that when shown how to make goals, goals that were shorter term (and more likely to be reached), individuals started to set more goals and see more improvement in their life.

This way of thinking can be used in so many ways in our daily lives. For adults, especially after the holiday season and all of the yummy treats that come with it, the goal could be to lose 1 lb. in two weeks. This may seem ridiculous because it should be easy, but that is the point. 1 lb. every two weeks is about 25 lbs. for the year and that is a huge accomplishment. For our students, we can’t set goals that are too lofty either or there will not be the success to continue to push them forward. We can not expect that a student will go from a 60% or a C to 95% or an A, but could they go from a 60% tp a 65% within a month? Yes, that is doable and that is the key to goal setting, small, realistic goals that are relatively easy to accomplish.
As we enter into the second half of the school year, have these conversations with your children. Where are they at? Where do they want to go? What are the small goals that will be like the paving stones to the larger goal?

Happy New Year to the entire St. Martin’s family, here is to a great 2017!

  1. Former EICS Board of Trustees Chair Tony Sykora Remembered

I didn’t know Tony very well. I certainly knew of him and he was always very pleasant to me in the interactions that we had, but what struck me was that those who spoke of him always did so with a great fondness. The following link provides a great remembrance of Tony. In attending Tony’s funeral on Saturday, it became very clear just how much impact Tony had on those around him. As Archbishop Smith said during the homily, Tony has joined the Father in His heavenly kingdom. God Bless Tony.

  1. Family Game Night - Mark Your Calendars

Upon my learning that I would be coming to St. Martin’s, one of the items on my “to-do” list was to ensure that there were opportunities for families at St. MArtin’s to engage as a larger community. This was a major reason for the change in format to our meet the teacher event in October and is the catalyst to another event we will be hosting in January. On January 27 at 6 pm, we will be hosting a Family Game Night for all of the students and parents that are interested. More information will be coming out in the next week, but please mark your calendars.
  2. Christmas Concerts

I just wanted to pass along a huge thanks to all of the teachers involved in the Christmas concerts. It takes a lot of work and the performances of the students were amazing. A massive thanks to all of the students, as well. You all performed wonderfully. To my Division 1 students, it was great to be able to be part of the show!

Parents, grandparents, and other family members, thank you! You were an awesome audience to perform for. It is your commitment to our school that makes the teachers and students work so hard.

Finally, a BIG thanks to all of the parents that helped with setting up and taking down of the gym. It is a big task made super easy because of your assistance.
